Hasan Şemsi
Founder, Chairman
A graduate of Yıldız Technical University’s Mechanical Engineering department in 1964, Hasan Şemsi took the helm of Berdan Civata in 1982. Under his visionary leadership, the company grew from a small workshop into a fully integrated production facility spanning 48,000 m², ranking among Turkey’s top fastener producers. His unwavering commitment to quality and R&D led to the establishment of the industry’s most comprehensive test laboratories and the achievement of numerous international quality certifications, a first for Turkey in the sector. Furthermore, he has secured the company’s sustainable future by mentoring a second generation of specialized female leaders to manage Berdan Civata.
Detailed Biography
Born in Tarsus in 1937, Hasan Şemsi graduated from the Mechanical Engineering Department of Yıldız Technical University in 1964, after attending Adana Vocational High School. To improve his German and professional knowledge, he completed a one-year internship in Germany and Austria. Upon his return in 1966, while pursuing a Master’s degree at the same university, he worked with his professor, Şefik Okday, at Oklar Limited Company, marketing hard metal cutters.
Hasan Şemsi demonstrated remarkable success in the sales of hard metal cutters, a subject he learned in Austria and chose for his Master’s thesis. However, due to an import ban, he began his two-year mandatory military service in 1968. He married in 1970. He served as Operations Manager for 6 years at Denet Cıvata and then graduated from the newly opened two-year Business Economics Institute’s night program within Istanbul University’s Faculty of Business Administration before moving to STFA Civata in Adana. There, he held the positions of Factory Manager for 4 years and Assistant General Manager for 2 years.
When he retired from STFA Civata in 1982, he took over Berdan Machine Workshop, which was established three years earlier by his brother Yunus Şemsi in Tarsus on a 150 m² site with 5 employees. Over the years, he expanded the workshop to 400 m² and then vacated it in 2000 with its 25 employees to move to a 1,500 m² factory in the Mersin-Tarsus Organized Industrial Zone.
During his retirement, Hasan Şemsi taught Machining (Chip Removal) at Trakya Technical University’s Mechanical Engineering Department and Machine Elements at Mersin University, while also consulting for bolt factories in İskenderun and Saudi Arabia.
By acquiring a new industrial plot in the OIZ approximately every 3-4 years, he successfully grew Berdan Civata into one of Turkey’s top 5 bolt-nut companies, with integrated facilities established on a 48,000 m² area and over 400 employees.
Due to his emphasis on quality, he established the most comprehensive test laboratory in Turkey’s bolt-nut sector. Furthermore, Berdan Civata became a fully integrated fastener manufacturer with bolt-nut production plants, heat treatment facilities, electro-galvanizing, hot-dip galvanizing, and zinc flake coating plants. The company obtained TSE, ISO 9001, and GOST certificates, as well as being the first in the sector in Turkey to receive CE and TUCSAmark certifications. It also established Turkey’s most extensive test laboratory in this sector, becoming the first company whose laboratory received an accreditation certificate. While working with major Turkish firms like Gama, Tekfen, STFA, and ENKA, Berdan Civata also successfully collaborated with international giants in the wind energy sector, such as Nordex, Enercon, Alstom, Siemens Gamesa, and General Electric.
He was awarded Businessman of the Year and District Entrepreneur Incentive awards in 2006 and 2009 by the Mersin Industrialists’ and Business People’s Association (MESİAD).
In 2012, at a competition organized by KOSGEB to select Turkey’s most successful SMEs (Turkey 100), Hasan Şemsi was selected as one of the top 5 SMEs out of 1,108 contestants and received his plaque at a ceremony attended by the Prime Minister. He considers his greatest success to be training a second generation of four women—three of whom are his own daughters and one is the daughter of his brother and business partner—each specialized in different areas, to manage the now-corporatized Berdan Civata.
In 2013, in the “Turkey’s Rapidly Growing 100 Companies” competition jointly organized by TOBB and TEPAV, Berdan Civata ranked 87th in Turkey with a three-year average growth rate of 92%. Hasan Şemsi received his plaque from State Minister Cevdet Yılmaz at a ceremony held as part of the 5th Izmir Economic Congress activities.
He has taken on active roles in non-governmental organizations such as Tarsus TSO (Chamber of Commerce and Industry), the City Council, Tarsus Güçbirliği Foundation, TURAB (Turkish Arab Businessmen Association), and especially TASIAD. He played a crucial role in establishing İŞGEM, the largest production-oriented Business Development Center not just in Turkey, but in Europe.
